In my wanderings, I am happy to discover new places to buy plants. Along the highway between Sinoloan, Laguna and Real, Quezon, is a market place for all sorts of plants. Here you can find very large bird’s nest fern, tree ferns and staghorns and orchids. These plants are normally taken from the forest by the local people. A plant that would sell for P300 or more in Manila could be had for P50 or even less depending on your bargaining charm. They are so inexpensive that it is easy to get carried away and buy a lot. I go home with my pickup packed with plants.

In my last visit to this market, I bought a dwarf banana plant as I was attracted to its blossom. Importing a plant that has been planted on the ground is very tricky. Fortunately, the plant survived and adopted well in a large pot.
